Jan's Story

My name is Jan. I'm 48. I have two kids and two failed marriages. I served in the US Army from 1975 to 1981. My trauma was in 1980 when I was 24. Half my life I've lived with this pain, guilt, anger, self-loathing and the hope for a good life. I've learned "my way" doesn't work.

At the WTRP I've learned so many useful skills and exercises to get through the horrible times and to take my power back. I've learned to acknowledge my feelings and live through them, usually uncomfortably. Being able to achieve this has helped me realize I'm human. They are my thoughts. I have to acknowledge, validate and honor them and then move on. They are part of me. The way I react and behave is also mine. I have choices now. Having choices and choosing safely have changed my life.
